Introduction to Welding
Great for hobbyist or blacksmith
Service Description
Introductory Classes will cover shop orientation, safety policies and procedures, and provide new students with an introduction to the skills and fundamentals of the particular craft. This ensures a safe and enjoyable experience and allows the instructor to assess each student’s strengths and degree of knowledge and skill. Our classes all start with an introduction to the basic skills needed to advance. For our welding program, all students must initially take the Introduction to Welding Class where they will be introduced to basic welding techniques with MIG (metal inert gas) welding as well as the basic principles of several types of welding. The student will learn about the benefits and weaknesses of various types of welding machines and the risks and safety measures needed for each. Additionally, the student will be introduced to other shop tools commonly used along with welding. This class is an excellent introduction for someone considering entering the welding field, someone considering purchasing their first welder and for the hobbyist welder. However, this class WILL NOT confer any certifications on the student, nor is this to be considered sufficient and adequate preparation for the student to move on to unsupervised welding projects, but rather an initial step for the student to get an overview and supervised experience. NOTE: Welding involves a greater degree of hot metal sparks, molten droplets, and risk of burns compared to the Blacksmithing Introduction. Students are STRONGLY urged to wear long pants and boots for this class. This class is required before advancing to any of the other welding classes at Iron Osprey Forge. (The only exception will be prior students personally known to the instructors.) This class is also necessary before being able to participate in open shop time (which will commence in the Fall of 2020).
