160 US dollars
Marshall Circle

Service Description

Introductory Classes will cover shop orientation, safety policies and procedures, and provide new students with an introduction to the skills and fundamentals of the particular craft. This ensures a safe and enjoyable experience and allows the instructor to assess each student’s strengths and degree of knowledge and skill. Blacksmithing Our classes all start with an introduction to the basic skills needed to advance. For our blacksmithing program, all students must initially take the Introduction to Blacksmithing Class where they will learn many of the basic skills used by a blacksmith, including drawing out and tapering, bending, twisting, and punching. Students will also learn forge safety, proper use and terminology of the blacksmith’s basic tools and will complete several projects by the end of class. This class is required before advancing to any of the other blacksmithing classes at Iron Osprey Forge. (The only exception will be prior students personally known to the instructors.) This class is also necessary before being able to participate in open forge time (which will commence in the Fall of 2020). However, if a student has had prior experience, the Introduction Class will still cover the safety brief and review of the basics, but if the student has adequate knowledge and skill the remainder of the first session may progress beyond the basic projects. Working with hot iron comes with several obvious risks including really hot metal, heavy tools, flying sparks/soot, and more. Safety is our primary concern and students must come prepared with the risks/hazards in mind. Pants MUST be of a natural fiber (cotton, wool, cotton/wool blend) and shoes must be closed toe and preferably of leather or a heavy construction. Flimsy polyester shoes, crocs, sandals, or other lightweight foot coverings will not be permitted. Students WILL NOT be allowed into the forge area with inadequate footwear. Long pants are STRONGLY recommended, as well as lightweight long sleeve shirts, as there will be occasional sparks or hot scale that may hit your arm or leg. Contact lenses are NOT recommended for class although safety glasses will be provided, as well as other appropriate safety gear as needed. After completing the Introduction to Blacksmithing a student will be able to take more advanced classes that are offered throughout the year, starting with the Level 1 Blacksmith topics and then advancing to the intermediate Level 2 classes.
